Is Design, Art?
Reprinted from my PhilWeavers post.
Does it follow ba na pag designer ka, artist kana rin kagad? as a graphic designer, do you call your works “ART”?
in design and in graphic design in particular, form must always follow function. where “ART” is purely self expression and self gratifying, “Design” must conform to a defined message and/or purpose. both uses aesthetics but therein ends the similarity IMHO.
ito ang mistake ng maraming young designers. they confuse design with art and are often angry with clients if they want them to edit their “artworks.” maling practice ito. i’m not saying we cant be both a designer and an artist. i’m saying na these are two different things. would be designers should learn to be able to seperate the two.
this is why the shift from what was then called “graphic art/commercial art” to what is now known as “Graphic Design.” nagmature narin ata ang mga designers and were finally able to differentiate their jobs as non-art. mind you, this is a good thing.
paint at your own free time. design is a different discipline
QUOTE (”PW_JL”)..designing is an art itself.. “art is the creation of beautiful or significant things”
I disagree.
ART = Form over function
Design = Function over Form
sabi nga: design is objective, while art is subjective. If a designer produces a sign to direct people to the right place in a building, it has to do the job. Its function is not open to interpretation.
