Murder By Design Conference. It seems to be the mod thing to do these days…have a new media/graphic design conference of some sort. but 5 years ago (or was it four?) before there was a Graphika Manila, before the countless student org sponsored design this and that, there was MBD, the Murder By Design Conference spearheaded by PhilWeavers Network.
MBD was, in my mind, important because before its staging, nobody thought (atleast here in the Philippines) that graphic design was a niche market seperate from advertising that also needed catering to and cultivating.
I’ve no idea when PhilWeavers will once again resurrect its non-profit but highly seminal (ok I’m pushing it. lolz) conference in light of better funded and more organized design conferences now available locally. Then again one of the objectives of MBD was to help introduce and share graphic design in manila and the rest of the country; and with the outcropping of countless design gatherings after its debut, maybe it has already accomplished the task it wanted to do: popularize graphic design appreciation; thereby justifying its demise.
